About the Author

Corey W. Johnson is a Professor and Program Chair of the Qualitative Research Program in the Department of Leadership, Education Administration, and Policy at the University of Georgia. He teaches courses on social justice, gender and sexuality, qualitative data collection, ethnography, and philosophy of science. His scholarship focuses on the power relations between dominant and non-dominant populations in the cultural contexts of leisure. This examination provides important insight into both the privileging and discriminatory practices that occur in contemporary settings. In 2012 he received the UGA PresidentÂ’s MLK Jr. Achieving the Dream award for his efforts to make society more just. Diana C. Parry is an Associate Professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, at the University of Waterloo. Utilizing a feminist lens, her research privileges women's standpoints and aims to create social change and enact social justice by challenging the medical model of scholarship. In particular, this research explores the personal and political links between women's leisure and women's health, broadly defined. Diana serves as Special Advisor to the President on WomenÂ’s and Gender Issues.

As a professor at the Graduate level, I will use this book to show students how to apply the 7 Methodological Approaches (Ethnographic research, case study research, phenomenology, historical inquiry, participatory action research, evocative inquiry, and grounded theories) in this book for fostering social justice through qualitative inquiry. Instead of teaching these two important concepts separately, the authors did a great job integrating the concepts in a very engaging manner that will keep students' interest and teach them how to apply the concepts. Within each methodological approach, the authors provide historical and disciplinary roots, strategies for data collection and data analysis, and relate the approach to social justice. In addition, a real-world research study is used to help the reader truly understand the methodological approach. You will be thankful you read this book and adopted it for your course!
