Corina Bomann's The Moonlit Garden instantly intrigued me when I read the book description so I knew I had to read it. I absolutely love reading historical fiction and I studied music for a long time growing up so I couldn't wait to start reading this book! As soon as I started it, I had a hard time putting it down and I tore through it within less than two days. I was also interested to see that The Moonlit Garden had originally been written in German and then translated into English by Alison Layland. In my experience, not all translated novels read as smoothly and beautifully as this one and, at just over 400 pages, The Moonlit Garden is an exquisitely-crafted novel that will appeal to historical fiction fans alike.Lilly Kaiser is in her late thirties and owns an antique shop in Berlin, Germany. She is working in her shop on a seemingly normal day when a mysterious elderly gentleman walks in to show her a violin, claiming it belongs to her. Before she can ask him any more questions, he disappears into thin air and Lilly is left to figure out the mystery behind the beautiful antique violin with the symbol of a rose on the back and a piece of sheet music tucked into the violin's case. Suddenly, Lilly's life has been altered and she has been given a new purpose of tracing down the history of the violin and why would have received it. Before she knows it, she is on a whirlwind journey over multiple continents to discover what happened so long ago to the violin's original owner.Beautifully written and flawlessly translated, The Moonlit Garden is a wonderful historical fiction novel that kept me thoroughly engaged over the past two days. I stayed up way too late and hardly did anything else other than read this book and I loved every single minute of it! I loved this novel so much that it will stay with me for a long time and I would definitely be interested in reading another of Corina Bomann's novels. I highly recommend The Moonlit Garden for anyone who enjoys historical fiction!

Way too wordy, redundant, and unnecessary descriptions. My favorite example is "She took the envelope in her hand over to place it on the table." I couldn't figure out it was in her hand? And "the phone rang so she walked over to the table to pick up the receiver as she wondered who could be calling." That sort of writing is frustrating to wade through. And there were too many "happy" coincidences, such as meeting Gabriel on the plane, then finding exactly what she needed on her first day in Sumatra, and finally discovering her relationship to her best friend. Way too convenient and highly unlikely. Otherwise, the premise of the story was intriguing, and the descriptions of life in Sumatra were interesting. But a good editor could clean it up and make it faster paced and worthy of praise.

I chose this book because I thought there would be more suspense and depth, although it was an easy and pleasant read. I dislike when endings fall flat, as this one did for me. I'll break it down as follows:Story: The overall story line is catchy and good. The author chose to use alternating timelines. In the prologue you meet Helen Carter, a distinguished violinist from London in 1920 who's fate is spelled out very clearly. The book then opens up in present day Berlin. Meet Lilly Kaiser-a widowed, lonely antique shop owner...that's pretty much it. The plot is exposed in the first chapter, in which an unknown older gentleman comes into Lilly's shop to gift her with an antique violin (wonder who's it could be??) along with sheet music for "The Moonlit Garden." He offers no information, other than she is the rightful heir of said violin, and then disappears into the night. Lilly decides her life is boring enough (which it is) that she can spend some time to solve the mystery of the violins origins. This takes her to London to visit her good friend Ellen, who may be able to help her. The final timeline is set in Indonesia in 1902 where you are introduced to I'd argue the best characters in the book: Paul Havenden and Rose Gallway. This was perhaps the most interesting part of the story so I'll leave you to discover who they are.Writing/Characters: As much as I wanted to like the main character, I just could not help but crave more attention to her. I think Lilly was very much one-dimensional, and I just don't agree with the way she was dropped into the situations she came across when trying to discover her violin mystery.I did thoroughly enjoy the descriptions of Indonesia, which took us to Padang, Surabaja and Sumatra, although I think there could have been more to dissect there.Overall, it is a quick and easy read. I was able to download for free with my Amazon Prime, Kindle First book selection, otherwise I don't think I would've chosen this book as a paid item. If you don't like stories to jump from one story line/timeline to another you might not like this book.
