Veith and Sutton have contrived to present the Lutheran, Christian faith as the antidote to the virus of modernism and it post-modern mutation. Written for college-educated Christians and seekers. A fine read.

After receiving this book in the mail, I had it read through by the next morning. Being a pastor in northern Montana I plan to use this book in my congregations, and will form a class to study it. I want every person in our community to read this book. Everything in this book I have talked about before (or at least attempted to) and am very passionate about. I know that every person in my congregation will be blessed by it.

A prominent author and young pastor team up to publish this book which seeks to put forward the case that Lutheranism is the best tradition to address the postmodern world that we live in.They do so by organizing this case under three main topics: confessional, sacramental and vocational. Veith has written books on the topics of postmodernism and vocation and thus has the appropriate past to address the issue with some experience.I've found most people do not know or understand what a Confessional Lutheran believes and practices, so this book can serve as a fine introduction to that. As well, the case is made clearly and concisely that Lutheran tradition provides the best contender against postmodern thinking and culture. With its commitments to Scripture Alone and Justification by Grace through Faith, the Lutheran approach is a formidable contender against other systems. The only comment this reviewer would offer is that there could have been more on the differences within Christianity on the material and formal principles that traditions follow. Significant benefits from this apply to most all theological areas as what authority one adheres to, e.g. Scripture alone or Scripture plus logic and philosophy or Scripture plus experience and emotions result in different centers of theology, e.g. the cross alone, sovereignty of God, or human choice.Nonetheless, this book is a fine offering to our world to consider (which again most have not) Lutheran as not only being the true biblical tradition but in addition the one best suited for our postmodern world. Purchase, study and gift this excellent work.

The authors present an excellent explanation of the power of Lutheran Confessional theology which is grounded in a theology of the Cross. They also point out that Confessional Lutherans understand that the Bible is the error-free word of God and that both the Old and New Testaments point to Christ Jesus as both God and man in one being. As man he lived among us and intimately understood our struggles, fears, and uncertainties - yet He never sinned. As God, He sacrificed himself on the cross to pay for the sins of everyone for all time. This sets people free. This is the Gospel. This is the objective truth which can provide the Postmodern world with the foundation to live a meaningful life because it is a life centered on Christ Jesus and His promise of eternal life to all who believe and are baptized in his name. Lutheran theology explains what Christ himself taught - that our life's purpose is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves And why do we do this? Because of what God in Christ has first done for us. As the authors again explain, echoing St. John, "we love because he first loved us". Only this provides the peace that passes all understanding.

I purchased Authentic Christianity in the hopes it would be a Lutheran companion to Dreher's "The Benedict Option". Overall, it is a solid exposition of Christianity's response to postmodernism. Its opening chapters contain some of the best summaries of today's problems and their histories that I have read. Vieth and Sutton lay forth a well-developed response, but it is not necessarily cohesive. The closing chapters become repetitive and the editing overall slips. However, this would be a good book for a college-level study group, but too meaty for any younger ages.

Awesome presentation of confessional Lutheranism and how it relates to a post-modern world.

What does the Church require to reclaim lost ground in the 21st Century? How can we answer postmodernism? What can unite the countless feuding – and dissolving – denominations into a force for reclaiming the culture? We do not lack for books offering answers to those questions. Gene Edward Veith, along with co-author A. Trevor Sutton, maintains in Authentic Christianity that the perfect solution is one already in place – Lutheran theology. The “star” of the book is a Lutheran philosopher of whom (I have to admit) I’d never heard – Johann Georg Hamann (1730-88). Goethe, we’re told, called Hamann “the brightest mind of his day.” A convert from Enlightenment thinking, Hamann deconstructed rationalism and insisted that reason was useless and destructive when separated from faith. According to the authors, he anticipated postmodernism in his critique of autonomous reason. He may, they suggest, have been the father of that linguistic analysis which so dominates modern philosophy. But for him this line of thought led, not to despair, but to trust in Jesus Christ, His Word, and His Church.Veith and Sutton go on to analyze the (self-destructive) thinking of the modern world, and they explain how Lutheran theology answers the inherent questions of our time and fills basic human spiritual needs. The book works itself out as a systematic apologetic for Lutheranism, aimed at modern readers. If you’re looking for a stable church home, you could do far worse than reading this fresh and interesting book.

I gave this book to a young man who is aspiring for the ministry and he began reading it the moment he opened it. He has given rave reviews.
