This is a fascinating book. It is interesting in so many levels. It tells the story of depression era America. The situation in France during the same time and before World War 2 breaks out. It tells the story of the American volunteer Ambulance Corps in the Finnish/Russian war.The information on the state of America during the depression was interesting. especially the part about people going to college and then not being able to find a job and the authors descision to not go to college and head to France in search of opportunity. This sounds like some good information for today's generation. The description of America before WW2 was so interesting. That the colleges were producing the same type of left leaning wusses that they are today made me want to laugh. The fifth columnists were as strong back then as they are today. The information on the Finnish/Russian war was interesting. Not a lot of people know this history. This was only a brief part of the book but makes me wantto know much more. The scene where the Russian soldiers had their throats slit and died as statues due to the cold was chilling. His reference to Adolph Schicklgruber made me laugh out loud. You really have to be down in the weeds to get that reference and I did.

If you are interested in reading this book then you're someone I'd like to know because it is obscure, but very interesting, World War Two History.Dove-tailing in to the history of Americans who served in the French Foreign Legion during the First World War, Jack Hasey felt it was his destiny to serve the nation that had adopted him with open arms. The Cartier jewelry salesmen fist set out in as a driver for a free lance ambulance corps serving and wounded as part of the French forces in Finland. This alone might have made for an interesting story. But Hasey wasn't deterred. When France fell he struggled to find a way out of France and into the Free French Foreign Legion as a driver. But driving was not something that appeared to Hasey. In his case, he wanted to be infantry, something I can understand. What follows is the story of an American serving in the Legion. His adventures in Africa and the Mid-east are the stuff of legions. Dusty roads, dark corners of third world cities, and a cataclysmic battle in Syria provide a background for a movie, but in reality, remains true history as Hasey becomes a Legion legend as well as the first American wounded in the cause of Free France.Things I liked about this book include the fact that it describes the Finish Russo war in some detail. This is an area that does not normally get much attention. I also greatly enjoyed the authors experience in the desert. Trust me. It will make you want a glass of water when you read it.One of the most interesting aspects of this book includes descriptions of events that happened in Jordan, Syria and Beirut. These areas a generally known as having been part of the theater of operations. But little has been said about what happened there...I was deeply impressed with the description of Australian, New Zealand, Scottish, English, French Colonial Forces and dozens of others moving against Axis forces in the Mid-east.The book doesn't end the way you would expect it to. Partially because this book was published during the war! The author's service is nowhere close to being finished by the time the book ends. I won't spoil this for you...but if you know anything about the name Jack Hasey you'll know he served in 19 countries and dozens of conflicts as a CIA Operations Officer for many years after the war.

I found this this story both interesting and emotionally intriguing. Well placed young man decides to fight for an adapted country and casually recounts contacts with the highest levels of society.

What a read I had never heard of this brave man who fought so gallant! It seems that today society is repeating history again as it was during the 1930's in America.

Interesting perspective of an American working in France before WWII. The author puts you there in the desert fighting a war. Keeps your interest. His meeting famous personalities while working for Cartier kept my interest.

A great piece of history concerning, an aspect of WWII seldom discussed these days; the Legion's vacillating war service with the Allies.
