This author applies his journalistic talents to a subject that he takes seriously and personally: how various churches across the United States relate to LGBT people. He also includes what some gay/lesbian churchgoers (and no longer churchgoers) have to say about their faith and their experiences with churches. He chronicles a wide range of interactions that show how some churches are devolving and some are evolving, on a continuum from outspoken persecution of gay/lesbian sexual identity to full inclusion of LGBT people in the life of the church.Here are some of my favorite quotes:> “I doubt. A lot. And yet I can’t not believe in God.”> “I encountered a church that’s far more divided than I imagined, led in large part by cowardly clergy who are called to be shepherds yet behave like sheep.”> “‘Coming-out’ is an overly reductive term, as if at one moment you’re in the closet and then the next, you’re not. For most of us, that’s not how it happens. The process of revelation is more like an Advent calendar, where you open door after door, behind each of which is a different element of identity.”> Ben says: “There are moments where you think to yourself, What if I am totally wrong? I wish I could say it’s one hundred percent, but we all have those days. So I just wake up in the morning and talk with Jesus. We’re good, and that’s enough for me these days.”This book helped me become more informed on the subject. So much is at stake for all of us to get this right. May God help us embrace diversity for so many reasons including “because God created diversity.”

Being someone who is on a similar path as the author, I really enjoyed this book. For any man who has struggled with understanding where he fits in a world of religion and Christianity, but does not know how to do so while doubting his own personal sexuality, as well as doubting where Christianity and God fit into that, then you need to read this book. It causes you to look at it all as a bigger picture, and to find your own path to where you can relate to both your personal attractions, and your longing to relate to God.

This is an excellent book. Jeff Chu explores virtually all aspects of the issues faced by gay Christians... family responses, church responses and practices, "conversion" ministries, choices regarding how to live their lives and the consequences of each of those choices down the road, etc. He weaves his own story and those of many others throughout the book. It is both heartbreaking and hopeful. It is a must read for anyone trying to understand this issue from all perspectives. Thank you for writing this, Jeff.

This book is grace in paper, print and binding! It is lovely, beautifully written, as only a journalist can accomplish. Chu does not demonize so called ex-gays, nor does he elevate gays. He kindly, genuinely, presents each side in a humble, love-extending manner. It is a delight to read. Educational for the person seeking to understand gay friends and loved ones. Encouraging and hopeful for reconciliation between gays and the broader Christian church.

A great cross section review of gay Christian conflict with the church at large. This is not a theological study , simply a display of the problems facing gay Christians who are brave enough to come out. Jeff has done the community and the church a wonderful service in bringing the stories to the open. The Lord is caring but the majority of the church is damning.

For those finding a need for more information amid changing accents, this authorprovides a highly useful survey of what involved people are doing to finda God-pleasing response to God, one they love. There is clarity.For those wondering what churches are doing in the same involvement above,likewise, there is a useful survey, too. Also, there is clarity.The author uses trace, but significant, highlights of contemplative writers such asNouwen. The author repeatedly describes his effort to "please God," and, doing so,copies a key writing in Merton's Prayer, a prayer about a life on the pilgrimage withGod, in a trusting faith, in what is an ordinary life, unique for one wishing to please God.The author makes the case for decent, same-sex Christian life, as the traditional biblicalverses are put into context, not out of traditional context commonly used to make blame.No doubt, this book joins the literature used by closeted, help groups for parents shockedby the coming out of same-sex children. Better to read and be helped than to "chasechildren through the woods while firing bullets at the children." Lord have mercy.

Fascinating reading. The author takes you on a wild and bumpy ride across America to churches spanning a full spectrum. He befriends members of these various congregations and lets them speak for themselves, so you get a taste of life as a gay member. And the mix of individuals are as full spectrum as the denominations. By the time you turn the last page you feel the author is a close and caring friend himself.
