If all you are looking for is a pretty basic home atlas, one that has the great quality of print and content we all expect from National Geographic, then this edition is probably a good one for you. On the other hand, let me give you these heads-ups about some of things you will not find here. First, if you like an atlas that tells you - when you are looking at something close to the edge of a given page - where to find the adjoining map, you won't find that information provided by this atlas. You'll simply have to search for that next map on your own, and you may be disappointed when you do track it down, because it may not actually be an adjoining map. Second, if you are looking at, let's say, the eastern part of Myanmar and would like to know what cities and towns are located just across the border in China, tough luck. Even though you can see that China is right next door, this atlas grays out China on the map that shows you Myanmar. This atlas groups some countries into regions and only shows you those countries on any given map. For my purposes, these are real drawbacks, but I simply cannot afford Nat. Geo's very large, gorgeous World Atlas, the one that is found in libraries and on a number of cruise ships. There is enough here for me to keep this edition in my home, but it falls short of what I really need and want. I can give it only a qualified, lukewarm thumbs-up.
Unless I have missed something else, this atlas (FRAOTW) is the best one that is not named 'National Geographic Atlas of the World, Tenth Edition (NGAOTW). Moreover, a new FRAOTW will cost you about 40% of a new NGAOTW.Sure, this FRAOTW contains less maps than NGAOTW and NGAOTW will have much more detail, map for map. But consider this:1) I have read that NGAOTW is huge and heavy. Seated in my reading chair, I reach down and to the side to grab the FRAOTW and it is heavy enough to hoist.2) I'd say 9 times out of 10, the FRAOTW will meet my needs. Did I find in it Kayak Island, where Vitus Bering first saw North America in 1741? No. I'm sure NGAOTW would have had it. But I've found every other place that I was looking for in FRAOTW so far and I do not feel disappointed over not locating an island of only 28.5 square miles! (Besides, that's what the internet is for.)This FRAOTW is supposed to be for casual reference for armchair reading. For that purpose, I am well-satisfied. The word "Family" in the title suggests that it is intended to be suitable for younger readers as well. The FRAOTW is beautiful, I might add. The maps are quite clear and readily understandable. Plus, there is no tiny, unreadable font anywhere, not even in the index.Just don't use it to find geographic flyspecks!
This atlas has a lot of interesting information. I would have loved one of the expensive ones, but that wasn't a good option at the time I bought it. I keep it in the den next to my recliner because I use it when reading about a place or watching TV shows set in different places. It isn't too big or too small.
Filled with information. Got this for my husband for Christmas and he loved it! You can spend hours learning and enjoying with tons of text and full color photographs and maps!
Purchased this Atlas for my mother, so many choices for the Category of World Atlas with a tremendous range of prices. My mother loves this book, good size, great color maps, and reasonably priced. She highly recommends this item.
